What Is BPC-157?

BPC-157 stands for Body Protection Compound-157 — a 15-amino acid peptide derived from a protective protein found in human gastric juice. It is entirely synthetic and does not occur naturally at the concentrations used in research. Researchers became interested in BPC-157 after observing that the stomach's inner lining (which is constantly exposed to acid) has a remarkable ability to repair itself. The thinking: what if the protein responsible for that self-repair could be isolated and applied elsewhere in the body?

What the Animal Research Shows

The majority of BPC-157 research has been conducted in rodents. Studies consistently show accelerated healing of tendons, ligaments, and muscles — with some of the most dramatic results seen in surgically severed Achilles tendons in rats. Researchers have also documented reduced inflammation, improved blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), and protective effects on gut tissue, including protection against NSAID-induced ulcers. The Evidence Gap: No Human Clinical Trials

Here is the most important fact about BPC-157 that any responsible source must state clearly: there are no completed, published, double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trials for BPC-157 as of 2026. All efficacy data comes from animal studies. The anecdotal reports from humans who have used it — often compelling — are not a substitute for clinical evidence. This doesn't mean BPC-157 doesn't work in humans; it means we don't have the scientific tools yet to confirm or refute its effects in people.

Legal and Regulatory Status

BPC-157 is classified as a research chemical in the United States. It is not FDA-approved for human use. It cannot legally be sold as a dietary supplement or drug. It is banned by WADA for competitive athletes. The FDA has taken enforcement action against some peptide sellers who made therapeutic claims.
